10 Tips to Choose a College after Class 10th

  • May 8,2021

Students often face a dilemma while making a choice after class 10th.  Some students are absolutely clear about their choices while others are still juggling between the different options they have.  These initial years are the building blocks of the career of a student and lay the foundation.  While making this choice, students should keep in mind their area of interest and future prospects.

These 10 tips can help you in making a wise choice-

1. Analyzing the various streams available- students must take into account the various options that are available.  They must have complete knowledge about the streams and options including science stream i.e. medical and non-medical, commerce and humanities.  Students must analyze the career prospects and domains that are offered by all of the above-mentioned streams.

2. Prioritizing self-interest- students should not succumb to the pressure of opting for science or giving up on humanities because of the myths hovering around the different streams.  Students must identify their area of interest and the field that they would want to build a career in.  To start on the correct note, one should make a wise decision.

3. Compare all options available- once a student figures out the field that interests them the most, they should prepare a list of all the colleges that they can choose from and the admission criteria as well.  Students should make wise comparisons and take wise decisions.  Students should take into consideration not only the local colleges but the colleges located in other states and foreign countries too.  The list should be a long one to make sure that all possible options are covered.

4. Compare the costs- having figured out the various options available, students should compare the costs that are associated with each college that has been shortlisted.  An important element that should be taken into consideration while deciding the college is the cost and the expenses that will be incurred, thereby this information should be collected and compared.

5. Comparing financial aid schemes- the costs that parents have to incur can be reduced or funded by students as well.  There are different financial aids available that can be availed by students who perform extremely well.  The scholarship is another option that can be considered by students.  Students should try to consider the colleges and universities that offer financial aid to shed off some burden.

6. Talking to the alumni- have a word with the alumni or seniors of colleges is always a good idea.  They can provide a deep insight into the functioning, infrastructure, way of teaching, extra-curricular activities to the students who aspire to join the institute.  Students should not completely base their decision on the same but must take into consideration their opinions and suggestions.

7. Comparing the placement stats- securing a good job in the dream companies is one of the many things that students dream of.  For fulfilling this dream, students should into account the companies that visit the college, the kind of roles that are offered to students, the salary offered, etc.  If you are exploring Junior Colleges, check which Universities have their students got admission into.

8. Taking into consideration the location- the location of the college has a great impact on the fee structure as well as the services available in and around the college campus.  Some students do not wish to leave their hometown and thereby take into consideration the best that is available in their vicinity.   Some students wish to study from abroad and take into consideration colleges located in prime locations and big cities.  One must keep in mind their personal preferences while making this decision.

9. Don’t follow the crowd- it is always said that students should follow their interests and must not run after the crowd.  Studying something for the sake of it will never lead to success.  They must consider the factors and circumstances that suit their interest and make an informed decision instead of blindly following others.

10. Taking the help of a counselor- if the student is skeptical about his/her choice and preferences then s/he should consult a counselor.  Admission counselors help students in making well-informed decisions by helping them in identifying their core aptitude.  Counselors can also facilitate the process of selecting the college.  But it is suggested that visiting the counselor must be treated as the last resort.

The above-mentioned tips can help students in making an informed decision and take admission to the college which is best suited for them.  Parents should not handhold them, but must be there for them to give suggestions and direct them towards the right path.  As mentioned earlier, this decision will build the foundation for students’ careers and thereby must be made after considering all the relevant factors.
