Do you need to take up an aptitude test before you choose your career?

  • April 15,2021

One of the important decisions of our life that give us the jitters is choosing our career path.  We have our friends, parents, relatives, and visitors giving their suggestions on what would be the best career option.  Choosing an industry and role will shape the first few years of our careers and impact how we perceive our careers themselves.  So, it is vital that we make a wise choice when it comes to choosing our careers.

Since it is such an important decision, we cannot arrive at a conclusion in the next one hour or simply pick a random option or because someone says so.  We have to give it some thought, analyze the pros and cons, introspect our strengths and weaknesses and arrive at a decision with clarity in thought.

Taking up an aptitude test will help you in your career decision.  Before we explain why an aptitude test will help you make your decision and put you on the right path to success, let us first look at what an aptitude is.

What are aptitude tests?

Aptitude is the ability of an individual to carry out certain tasks.  There are many types of aptitude tests, but the common ones used across the globe test students on their logical skills, reasoning ability, verbal and non-verbal communication, and other such abilities.

Few tests also ask students about their likes, dislikes, their strengths, weaknesses in different areas of understanding.  There is also a type of aptitude test, where applicants are assessed on their character, thoughts, and behavior and if they will fit in with a particular environment. These are called psychometric tests.

Why aptitude tests?

Analyzing your performance on these aptitude tests will help you get a fair idea about yourself and help with introspection. Once you know your strong and weak areas, it will be easy to narrow down your career choices.

While it is important to follow your interests, it does not mean that everyone will excel when they take up their area of interest as their career.  Interest and aptitude are completely different things.  A person with an interest in an area also has to possess the aptitude and potential to perform well in that area.

This is when aptitude tests will help you out.  If you have an interest in an area, then take an aptitude test relevant to that interest.  The results of the test will show you where you stand, your strengths and weaknesses in the area.  Based on this, you can make your career decision.

Because you like doing something or you are good at something does not mean you will be able to survive in that particular area.  This is why we recommend attempting aptitude tests.  Taking such tests before making a career choice will tell you things about yourself and your abilities that you would not have known before.

So, we recommend attempting an aptitude test before you come to a conclusion on one of the most important decisions of your life.
