The prestigious engineering institutes in India – Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) offers a number of programs at the undergraduate (UG), postgraduate (PG) and at the doctorate level across the streams of science, technology and engineering.  There are 23 IITs across India and the seat intake for B.Tech. program stands at 9,611.

The B.Tech. degree - Bachelor of Technology in various disciplines is the most sought-after program in IITs by engineering enthusiasts.  The duration of B.Tech. courses is 4 years and the fee structure varies across the 23 institutes in India.

The admission to B.Tech. course in IITs is through a nation-wide entrance examination, IIT-JEE.  Clearing JEE Mains and Advanced will help you secure a seat in IITs. For more details on the exam, visit IIT-JEE in a Nutshell (hyperlink).

There are 23 IITs in India located in different regions.  Few of the institutes include IIT Bombay, IIT Madras, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Roorke, etc.

These institutes together offer more than 250 Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech.) courses in various disciplines.  As we cannot specify each course from individual institutes, we have put together a list of the common courses.  We will also look at the disciplines offered in each course, followed by a couple of niche courses at IITs.

Common Courses Offered by IITs

Here is a list of the common courses by IITs –

  1. Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech.)

  2. Bachelor of Science (B.S.)

  3. Dual Degree (B.Tech. – M.Tech.)

  4. Dual Degree (B.S. – M.S.)

  5. Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch.)

  6. Bachelor of Design (B. Des.)

Disciplines in Each Course

Each of the course is delivered in specific specializations for the student’s preference. Let us look at the common specializations offered for B.Tech. across the 23 institutes in India –

  1. Aerospace Engineering

  2. Chemical Engineering

  3. Electrical Engineering

  4. Mechanical Engineering

  5. Civil Engineering

  6. Computer Science & Engineering Department

Each year, more than 90% of JEE applicants clearing the exam opt for engineering specialization.  Of these, Computer Science is the most sought-after specialization followed by Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering.  Other popular specializations include Petroleum Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Marine Engineering and Automobile Engineering.
