The decision to pick a stream after passing 10th is one of the toughest decisions that students have to make.  There are three different options that are available to students i.e. Arts, Science, and Commerce.  Students often face a dilemma and are afraid of making a wrong decision, but they should always make it a point that they make this decision according to their interest and not under pressure.  It should be understood that these three streams stand equal in terms of difficulty level as well as the importance and none of these is superior to the other one.  Making the right choice is important because the 11th and 12th standards form the base of the career paths that students opt for.  There is a countless number of myths that hover around these streams, like science is opted by students who score 10 CGPA, arts and commerce are a piece of cake and do not require efforts and a career in the field of humanities is not a rewarding one, thereby both students, as well as parents, should realize that none of the above-mentioned statements are true and each of these streams is equally competent and rewarding.  There is no set of guidelines or rules that have to be followed while making a choice, but here are some tips that can prove to ease the process of making a decision.

1. Understanding about all three streams- Before making a decision, students should have knowledge about these three streams, because it will help them in making an informed decision.  Knowing the area of interest and pursuing the same is always suggested.  Having an interest in learning and understanding the subjects in a particular field is important.  Parents should also realize the same and should not push their children to pursue something that they are not interested in.  Thereby, understanding and reading thoroughly about all three streams is important as well as the initial step.  At this point taking a career counsellors suggestion is also recommended.

2. Knowing about yourself and your aptitude- the second thing that students should give preference is to understand themselves and their aptitude.  Aptitude simply refers to the ability of the student.  There are different sets of aptitude tests available that can be undertaken to assess the area that interests the student.  These tests not only help in understanding the level of performance but also the area of interest.  Students can take these tests online as well as under the guidance of a career counsellor.  These days’ schools also conduct such tests to help students in making an informed decision.

3. Choosing the right set of subjects- once a student is aware of all the three streams as well as his personal choice, he/she should move towards choosing the right combination of subjects.  There are different subjects that are available and a wise choice must be made, by also taking into consideration the country one is planning to pursue under graduation from.  In case a student picks commerce, then he has to make a choice between physical education and maths.  This choice of subject will vary from school to school.  A right combination of subjects builds the right foundation for learning.

These are the three simple steps that should be followed by students when they are planning to choose a stream because as mentioned earlier these choices will lay the foundation for the future.  Facing this dilemma is common and it has also been observed that a lot many students take decisions during their 8th standard only.  It is completely dependent upon their personal choice and the subjects that interest them the most.  At last, one should always listen to themselves and follow their passion wisely because, in today’s competitive environment commerce, arts and science offer an excellent career path to the students, all they need to do is find their interest and put in hard work.
